Our Critical Thinking Skills Science Program is focused on the development of critical thinking skills, interpersonal relationship skills, self-confidence through individual achievement, and foundational leadership skills. Your students are never forced but are always encouraged to challenge themselves as they progress through the process of self-discovery and coming to a new understanding of their role in the world in which we live.
Through a creative presentation of Scientific Method your students will discover and experience science as a disciplined, consistent, and fascinating method of inquiry into the natural world with the determination of discovering what is true as the ultimate goal. As your students embark on the experiential journey of strengthening their observational, analytical, and perceptual skills they find that nature is replete with natural phenomena that have a story to tell. Through a process of orderly investigation, students will come to a better understanding and a deeper appreciation of the wonders found within the remarkable life-forms and information-rich biological systems that they have had the privilege of exploring.
One of the unique aspects of our program is our purposeful focus on “relationship”. True education does not take place without first establishing trust which is the foundation upon which any relationship is established. Our staff are experienced and thoroughly trained in the fields of natural sciences and the vast array of outdoor education skills but, our main focus remains on the development of a relationship with your students. The presentation of our curriculum is designed to remain strictly within the limitations and boundaries that are set by current interpretations of the “separation clause”.
Offering a wide variety of hands-on, experiential, academically rigorous science classes for your 5th through 8th grade students our curriculum meets all current California State Standards for Science Content. After an introduction to a specific area of study, students are divided into “research groups” to collect and record pertinent data. Research groups then share their information and work together to analyze the information to form logical conclusions as a result of their study.
Beginning with Team Challenge activities at the ground level, your students will progress onto the Bouldering Rock and Climbing Wall elements before taking on the challenge of our two High Ropes Adventure Course elements, the Vertical Play Pen and the Zip-Line. Your students will not only grow in self-confidence and interpersonal relationship skills but, with the guidance of our trained staff, will come to a real experiential understanding of what it means to be an active member of an effective team.
In keeping with the intent of the new Common Core Academic Standards, your students are provided with two different Student Journals for the recording of their experiences. The first student journal is an Academic Journal which is filled-out during the course of their various academic classes. The second student journal is a personal Cabin Journal in which each student will enter written responses to specific questions relating to their experiences during the day. At the end of your stay, these two journals are combined into one forming a complete and personal written record of this transformative adventure.
